Hair Extension Options: Halo, Bellami & Hand-Tied

Hair Extensions: Which Option is Right for You?

If you’ve started researching hair extensions, you’ve probably noticed every option claims to be “the best.” The best synthetic. The best natural hair. The best deal. The best match. But with prices ranging from $59 DIY kits to $2,000+ professional installs, how are you supposed to know what actually works for your hair—and what will leave you frustrated and out of pocket?

At Studio One Hair Design in Fresno, we specialize in natural-looking hair extensions that actually work for your lifestyle and hair goals. Let’s break down the three most common types of extensions—Halo Hair Extensions, Bellami Hair Extensions, and Hand-tied Hair Extensions (like NBR)—so you can confidently choose what’s right for you.

Halo Hair Extensions: Low-Cost, Low-Commitment, Low-Quality

When you're first dipping your toes into the world of extensions, halo hair extensions or clip-ins might seem like the perfect intro. They're fast. They're affordable. They claim to be “undetectable.”

But here’s the truth:

Halo and clip-in extensions rarely blend naturally unless you already have a thick head of hair and a perfectly matching shade. Even then, they can be bulky, obvious, and uncomfortable—especially if not installed properly. And tape-in extensions? We don’t recommend them at all. The adhesive can cause serious breakage and damage to your natural hair over time.

These types of extensions are also removable, which means you’ll need to reinstall them daily. If your goal is effortless, ready-to-go hair, this option isn’t it. And forget about versatility—your styling options are limited, especially with halos or clip-ins that shift or peek out when you wear your hair up.

Bottom line: if you're serious about your hair health and want a truly seamless look, these aren’t the long-term solution.

Bellami Hair Extensions: Mid-Quality with a Wide Range

Bellami Hair Extensions fall into the mid-range category—both in price and quality. You’ve probably seen them all over Instagram, and yes, they’re better than DIY options. They’re installed by a stylist and come in various types: keratin bonds, tape-ins, machine-tied wefts, and clip-ins.

But here's what you need to know: Bellami is a brand. Their hair quality is decent, but not top-tier. And while they have machine-tied options, they may not offer the highest-end hand-tied methods that many stylists (and clients) now prefer.

If you’re working with a stylist who uses Bellami hair, be sure to ask how long it lasts, how it’s maintained, and how it will blend with your hair. It's a solid middle-ground option, but not the gold standard for long-term wear or comfort.

Hand-Tied Hair Extensions: The Gold Standard (NBR & Beyond)

If you’re ready to invest in your hair, nothing compares to hand-tied hair extensions—especially methods like Natural Beaded Rows (NBR).

These are the crème de la crème of extensions. They use small, strategically placed rows that minimize damage, blend beautifully, and require far less daily maintenance. Instead of removing your hair every night, you get to wake up with gorgeous hair every day.

At Studio One, we love hand-tied extensions because:

  • They’re lightweight and comfortable

  • They blend seamlessly—even with fine or thinning hair

  • They protect your natural hair and encourage healthy growth

  • They’re ideal for low-maintenance beauty lovers

  • They save you hours of styling time every week

  • They can be customized with color and volume

While the upfront investment is higher, you’ll likely save time and money in the long run by avoiding constant reapplication, replacements, or damage repair.
